Building clearer workplace policies

Make policies easier to understand, apply and maintain.

Illustrative business activity

Start with everyday decisions

List workplace situations that repeatedly need clarification: leave requests, working arrangements, grievances, conduct and handling business information. Policies should address real operational needs.

Make responsibilities clear

Explain who a policy applies to, who makes decisions and how questions or concerns can be raised. Use accessible language and communicate policies to the people expected to follow them.

Keep documents consistent

Review employment agreements, handbooks and internal procedures together. Contradictory instructions make fair and consistent implementation more difficult. Record the current version and its review date.

Review before acting
